Offshore venting and flaring policy statement

On 1 December 2025, the Australian Government published a policy statement to explain how the Australian Government regulates venting and flaring at Australia’s offshore petroleum facilities in Commonwealth waters.

It includes an overview of:

• the government’s commitment to reduce and where possible eliminate venting and flaring of gas unless needed for safety purposes
• the role of Commonwealth regulators in managing, monitoring and reporting on offshore venting and flaring.
