Greenhouse gas

The Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006 establishes a title system for the exploration, injection and storage of GHG substances in geological formations in Commonwealth offshore areas.

There has been two acreage release rounds for GHG storage exploration released by the Australian Government (2009 and 2014).

There are currently four active GHG assessment permits in Commonwealth offshore waters. All four permits are located in offshore Victoria waters, and all have been awarded to the ‘Crown in right of Victoria’ as the sole titleholder.

For further information on the GHG acreage release process, or information on application types that fall outside the GHG assessment permit process, please contact NOPTA.
